China’s precipitated silica industry is accelerating its layout in supporting materials for new energy sectors. The rapid expansion of lithium battery and photovoltaic industrial chains pushes powder enterprises to continuously upgrade surface modification technologies and develop special precipitated silica products adapted to new energy resins and adhesive systems. In the past, precipitated silica was mainly used for rubber reinforcement in tires, with limited application scale in new energy materials. Conventional hydrophilic precipitated silica tends to agglomerate easily in adhesives and encapsulation resins, featuring poor dispersion that restricts key properties such as insulation and mechanical performance of materials. As new energy materials evolve toward high temperature resistance, low volatility and superior insulation, hydrophobically modified precipitated silica can optimize the interfacial compatibility between powder and polymer matrix, greatly improving the aging resistance, crack resistance and insulation protection performance of materials. It has gradually become a core functional filler for photovoltaic encapsulant films, lithium battery binders and encapsulation resin systems of new energy components.

On the supply side, leading domestic precipitated silica manufacturers target the new energy material market and build new production lines for customized modified powder. A continuous surface modification section is installed after the precipitation unit to realize integrated production of precipitated silica synthesis and surface modification, avoiding impurity contamination and batch performance fluctuations caused by secondary processing. Many enterprises increase investment in formula research and development, and can customize precipitated silica with different specific surface areas and hydrophobic degrees according to customers’ resin systems and curing processes. Many leading manufacturers have built material application laboratories to conduct filler dispersion tests, sample preparation and high-low temperature aging performance tests, shortening the formula development cycle for downstream new energy customers. With increasingly strict environmental protection and energy consumption policies, mother liquor recovery and resource utilization of by-products have become key approaches for manufacturers to reduce carbon emissions and cut costs. Multiple production lines have completed water recycling renovation to effectively lower carbon footprints. Prices of basic raw materials such as sodium silicate and sulfuric acid fluctuate with chemical industry cycles. Enterprises optimize precipitation reaction processes to improve raw material conversion efficiency and offset cost pressure brought by raw material price hikes. Small and medium-sized manufacturers that can only produce basic hydrophilic precipitated silica without supporting modification lines face declining competitiveness. Industrial capacity is rapidly concentrating on leading enterprises with R&D capacity for special powder for new energy applications.

On the demand side, demand for modified precipitated silica in various new energy materials keeps releasing steadily. In photovoltaic materials, modified precipitated silica is added into photovoltaic encapsulant films and component protective coatings to enhance UV resistance, yellowing resistance and wear resistance, ensuring long-term outdoor service stability of photovoltaic modules. In lithium battery supporting adhesive systems, hydrophobic precipitated silica can adjust system viscosity, improve thixotropy and boost wear and aging resistance of electrode coatings. For encapsulation resins of new energy devices, precipitated silica increases resin hardness, crack resistance and insulation performance, applied in encapsulation materials for electric control and energy storage modules. In lightweight composite materials for new energy, modified precipitated silica improves resin wettability, reduces molding defects and enhances overall mechanical stability of components. Wind power supporting resins and protective coatings keep expanding trial usage of modified precipitated silica to strengthen sand erosion resistance and weather protection of coatings. The traditional rubber industry still consumes large volumes of general hydrophilic precipitated silica, yet market increment is limited. Fierce homogeneous price competition squeezes profit margins and can hardly drive new industry demand. Downstream new energy material enterprises attach greater importance to integrated technical support. Powder suppliers no longer merely sell raw powder materials, but also provide filler dispersion schemes, sample trial production, aging verification and other technical services to deepen industrial chain collaboration.

In foreign trade markets, overseas orders for modified precipitated silica dedicated to new energy materials climb steadily, with growing procurement demand from new energy manufacturers in Southeast Asia and Europe. The high-end filler market overseas has long been dominated by international powder giants. Relying on stable quality control and cost advantages, domestic modified precipitated silica is gradually incorporated into overseas supply chains of new energy adhesives and encapsulation materials. Overseas customers impose strict access review standards, setting rigorous indicators for precipitated silica in particle size distribution, metallic impurity content, hydrophobic stability and batch consistency, while requiring complete quality inspection reports and safety data sheets. International trade barriers, long REACH registration cycles and volatile ocean freight rates remain major obstacles for export business. Multiple domestic enterprises are calculating and compiling product carbon footprint reports to meet European green procurement standards and further tap high-end overseas new energy customers.

Market outlook: In the short term, the market of general hydrophilic precipitated silica remains in oversupply with prices fluctuating at low levels, bringing heavy pressure on profit recovery for manufacturers. In the medium and long run, customized surface modification technologies for new energy materials will be the core for precipitated silica enterprises to build differentiated competitiveness, and modified precipitated silica dedicated to new energy boasts ample market growth potential. With continuous expansion of photovoltaic energy storage, lithium battery supporting materials and lightweight composite materials for new energy, downstream requirements on powder dispersion, interfacial bonding strength and batch stability keep rising. To break free from homogeneous competition, precipitated silica enterprises need to continuously deepen research on powder synthesis and surface modification technologies, develop multiple grades of special powder for new energy, build comprehensive material application evaluation platforms and deliver integrated filler solutions for downstream customers. The industry is transforming from simple powder manufacturing to customized powder development plus supporting technical services. Accelerating domestic substitution of high-end modified precipitated silica for new energy will serve as the core development line of the industry.
