China’s silica industry is continuously expanding application scenarios in the composite material sector. The rapid development of new material industries pushes powder manufacturers to optimize surface modification processes and develop dedicated silica products compatible with resin matrices. In the early stage, silica was mostly used for tire rubber reinforcement with limited application in composite materials. Ordinary hydrophilic silica tends to agglomerate in resin systems and shows poor dispersion, restricting product performance. As composite materials evolve toward lightweight, high toughness and anti-aging properties, hydrophobic modified silica can improve the interfacial bonding force between powder and polymer resins, effectively enhancing the mechanical strength, wear resistance and anti-aging performance of composite materials. It has gradually become a key filler for epoxy, polyurethane, unsaturated polyester and other systems.
On the supply side, leading domestic silica manufacturers develop dedicated modified powder production lines targeting the composite material market. A continuous surface modification unit is installed at the back end of precipitation production equipment to realize integrated powder preparation and surface treatment, reducing impurity introduction and performance fluctuations caused by secondary powder processing. Many enterprises increase investment in formula R&D and can customize modified silica with different specific surface areas and hydrophobic degrees according to customers’ resin systems and molding processes. Some manufacturers build supporting application laboratories dedicated to filler dispersion testing, composite sample preparation and performance inspection to shorten customers’ formula development cycles. Environmental supervision keeps tightening. Mother liquor recovery and resource utilization of by-product salts have become core measures for factories to cut costs and boost efficiency. Multiple production lines realize water recycling and reduce production carbon emissions. Prices of raw materials such as sodium silicate and sulfuric acid fluctuate with chemical cycles. Enterprises improve raw material utilization by optimizing precipitation reaction processes to ease cost impacts from raw material price hikes. Small and medium manufacturers without supporting modification production lines that can only produce basic hydrophilic silica see declining competitiveness. Industrial production capacity is concentrated in leading enterprises capable of developing special powders for composite materials.
On the demand side, demand for modified silica grows steadily in various composite material products. In resin-based composite materials, modified silica serves as a functional filler added into epoxy resin systems to improve product hardness, crack resistance and weather resistance. It is widely applied in industrial components and mold materials. In polyurethane composites, hydrophobic silica can adjust system viscosity and boost wear resistance for casting materials and artificial stone. For fiber-reinforced composites, silica improves resin wettability, reduces molding defects and enhances the overall stability of composites. In new building composite materials, modified silica improves impermeability and anti-aging performance to extend product service life. Resin systems supporting wind turbine blades have begun trial use of modified silica in small batches to optimize coating wear resistance and anti-sand erosion capacity. The traditional rubber industry still purchases large volumes of general hydrophilic silica. Market increment is limited with fierce price competition and narrow profit margins, hardly driving new industry demand. Composite material downstream enterprises increasingly prefer integrated supporting services. Instead of merely selling powder materials, powder manufacturers provide technical support including filler dispersion schemes, sample preparation and aging tests to deepen industrial chain cooperation.
In foreign trade markets, overseas orders for modified silica specially used for composite materials grow gradually. Procurement demand from composite manufacturers in Europe and Southeast Asia is obvious. The overseas high-end filler market has long been dominated by international powder giants. Relying on stable performance and price advantages, domestic modified silica gradually enters overseas supply chains of resin composite materials. Overseas customers set high access thresholds with strict indicators for silica particle size distribution, impurity content, hydrophobic stability and batch consistency, together with complete quality inspection documents and safety data sheets. International trade barriers, long REACH certification cycles and fluctuations in ocean freight rates remain major obstacles for export businesses. Many domestic enterprises are compiling product carbon footprint reports to meet European green procurement requirements and further explore high-end overseas composite material customers.
Market outlook: In the short term, the market of general hydrophilic silica remains oversupplied with prices fluctuating at low levels, making it difficult for enterprises to restore profits. In the medium and long run, customized surface modification technologies for composite materials will be the core for silica enterprises to build differentiated competitiveness. Modified silica dedicated for composite materials boasts broad growth potential. With the continuous development of lightweight composite materials, new building materials and wind power new materials, downstream requirements for powder dispersibility, interfacial bonding capacity and batch stability keep rising. To break through homogeneous competition, silica enterprises need to continuously advance powder synthesis and surface modification technologies, develop multi-grade special powders for composite materials, build a complete material application evaluation platform and provide integrated filler solutions for downstream customers. The industrial development model shifts from simple powder manufacturing to customized powder development plus supporting technical services. Accelerating domestic substitution of high-end modified silica for composite materials will become an important development direction of the industry.
