China’s domestic precipitated silica industry is currently transitioning from capacity expansion to a new phase of refined and functionalized development. The rapid rise of downstream new material industries has pushed powder enterprises to continuously tackle core technologies for surface modification. In the past, most domestic silica products were unmodified hydrophilic general-purpose powders with simple functions, only suitable for low-end rubber and ordinary filling scenarios. With technological upgrades in downstream industries, demand for hydrophobically modified silica has grown rapidly. The surface of silica particles is modified using agents such as silane coupling agents to change the hydrophilic property of powder and greatly improve its dispersibility in organic resins and polymer materials. It solves powder agglomeration problems and enables silica to adapt to more high-end application scenarios, becoming the core competitive track in the industry.
On the supply side, leading domestic silica manufacturers have deployed supporting powder modification production lines. Continuous surface modification sections are added on the basis of original precipitated silica production lines to integrate the production of raw silica and modification processing, effectively reducing quality fluctuations caused by intermediate transportation. Many enterprises have increased R&D investment and developed differentiated modification formulas to customize modified silica products with varying hydrophobicity and particle size distribution according to customer requirements. Fumed silica manufacturers also keep optimizing surface treatment processes and launch hydrophilic and hydrophobic product series to meet strict specification requirements in electronic encapsulation and high-end adhesives. Environmental protection and energy consumption controls continue to tighten. The resource utilization of silica production wastewater and by-product salts has become a key cost-reduction focus for enterprises. Some factories realize mother liquor recycling to reduce wastewater discharge and implement green production. Prices of raw materials including sodium silicate and sulfuric acid fluctuate periodically. Enterprises improve raw material conversion rates through process optimization to offset cost pressure brought by rising raw material prices. The living space of small and medium silica manufacturers without supporting modification capacity keeps shrinking, and industrial resources are accelerating to concentrate in leading enterprises with modification R&D capabilities.
On the demand side, hydrophobically modified silica has achieved volume growth in multiple high-end fields. The silicone rubber industry is the core downstream market for modified silica. The addition of modified powder can significantly strengthen silicone rubber and improve the tensile strength and tear resistance of finished products, widely used in high-temperature silicone and liquid silicone rubber. In the coating industry, hydrophobic silica acts as a matting and anti-settling additive. It performs well in high-end wood coatings, plastic coatings and industrial anti-corrosion coating systems, featuring low water absorption and superior storage stability. In composite material sectors, modified silica can serve as filler for epoxy resin and polyurethane resin to enhance material hardness and weather resistance. For lithium batteries, surface-modified silica is applied in separator coatings to boost the heat resistance and mechanical strength of separators and improve battery safety performance. In cosmetics, modified silica works as skin feel regulator and oil-absorbing powder in loose powder, foundation and other makeup products. The traditional rubber sector still purchases hydrophilic general silica with flat market growth, fierce competition and thin profit, which can hardly drive industrial increments. Downstream clients attach greater importance to customized services. Many powder manufacturers no longer merely sell powder products, but also provide supporting technical services such as formula adjustment and dispersion testing to deepen ties with downstream customers.
In foreign trade, export orders of modified silica are gradually rising, with prominent demand from Southeast Asia and Europe. The overseas high-end market has long been dominated by international powder giants. Relying on cost-performance advantages, domestic hydrophobically modified silica has gradually entered the supply chains of overseas coatings, rubber and composite materials. Overseas customers adopt strict audit standards, imposing rigorous requirements on powder particle size, hydrophobicity, impurity content and batch stability, together with complete test reports. International trade barriers, lengthy product certification cycles and fluctuations in ocean freight costs remain major obstacles to exports. Many domestic enterprises are compiling product carbon footprint documents to meet green procurement standards of the European market and further develop high-end overseas clients.
Market outlook: In the short term, the hydrophilic general silica market will maintain a supply surplus pattern with weak price oscillation, and profitability cannot be improved significantly. In the medium and long run, surface modification technology will be the key factor for silica enterprises to create product differentiation, and customized hydrophobic silica holds huge market potential. With the sustained development of polymer new materials, new energy, high-end coatings and cosmetics industries, downstream customers will continuously raise requirements on powder dispersibility and stability. To achieve breakthroughs in the future, silica enterprises must further explore surface modification processes, develop diversified functional grades and build application testing platforms to provide integrated powder solutions for downstream customers. The industry development focus is shifting from simple powder production to the model of material modification plus technical service. Promoting domestic substitution of high-end modified silica will be the main industrial trend in the coming years.
