With the sustained and rapid development of China’s new material industry, the precipitated silica sector is undergoing profound structural reshaping. The industry’s growth logic has shifted from simple capacity expansion in the early years to a new stage featuring R&D of high-end grades, iteration of green production processes and import substitution. The market for conventional general-grade precipitated silica has long suffered from overcapacity. A large number of domestic manufacturers produce highly homogenized products, resulting in prolonged low price fluctuations and squeezed profit margins for enterprises. In sharp contrast, high-performance specialty precipitated silica with high dispersibility, low oil absorption and low heavy metal content for green tires, silicone rubber, electronic materials, high-end coatings and lithium battery supporting materials maintains steady order growth. It serves as the core growth driver lifting the revenue of the whole precipitated silica industry and attracts massive industrial resources toward the high-end powder track.
On the supply side, leading domestic precipitated silica enterprises continuously carry out energy-saving and carbon-revamping upgrades for production lines, and gradually phase out outdated units with high energy consumption and substandard pollutant emissions. Nearly all newly launched projects focus on high-end specialty silica grades instead of blindly adding general-grade capacity. Normalized environmental and energy consumption regulations keep being enforced. Standards for wastewater discharge, solid waste disposal and flue gas treatment are tightened across regions. Factories in some areas have to dynamically adjust operating loads according to energy consumption quotas. Small and medium-sized plants with weak technical capabilities and inadequate environmental supporting facilities are exiting the market at an accelerated pace, steadily raising industrial concentration. Cyclical price swings of raw materials including sodium silicate and sulfuric acid directly affect production costs and squeeze profits of small manufacturers. Leading enterprises control costs and strengthen risk resistance by building self-owned sodium silicate production lines, signing long-term raw material procurement agreements and carrying out waste heat recovery renovations. Meanwhile, the localization of fumed silica speeds up. It is gradually replacing imported products in high-end sealants and electronic encapsulation fields, enriching the domestic supply portfolio of silica products.
The demand side shows an obvious divergent pattern. The tire industry remains the largest downstream consumer of precipitated silica. As the penetration rate of new energy vehicles rises year by year, the market demand for low rolling resistance green tires keeps expanding, directly driving up purchases of high-dispersibility precipitated silica. High-dispersibility precipitated silica can reduce tire rolling resistance and improve grip performance, matching the global low-carbon requirements of the automotive sector. Tire manufacturers keep raising the proportion of precipitated silica in formulations. Beyond tires, many emerging sectors continuously release incremental demand. In coatings and adhesives, precipitated silica works as anti-settling, thickening and matting fillers, with expanding applications in industrial anti-corrosion coatings, wood coatings and high-end adhesives. Within the lithium battery industrial chain, precipitated silica is applied in separator coatings, electrolyte additives and battery sealing systems. Demand for related powder materials rises alongside capacity expansion of power batteries and energy storage batteries. In silicone rubber, plastic modification and cosmetic powder modification, domestic precipitated silica gradually replaces imported powder materials with stable quality. By contrast, demand recovery in traditional ordinary rubber products and low-end plastic filling markets remains weak. Purchases only meet basic rigid demand and can hardly generate new growth, continuously weighing on the market of general-grade precipitated silica.
In foreign trade, China’s overall exports of precipitated silica maintain strong resilience, with Southeast Asia, Europe, Japan and South Korea as major export destinations. Overseas buyers are changing their procurement preferences. Instead of merely comparing prices, they favor eco-friendly precipitated silica featuring high dispersibility, low impurities and low carbon footprint. Long construction cycles and limited supply of local precipitated silica capacity overseas enable domestic products to steadily secure overseas market share by virtue of mature processes and cost-performance advantages. Nevertheless, export businesses still face multiple uncertainties. International trade barriers, overseas product access certifications, fluctuations in ocean freight rates and exchange rate variations all affect export profits. Some overseas customers put forward additional requirements such as carbon footprint testing and heavy metal content detection, forcing domestic manufacturers to optimize production workflows, complete product test documentation and boost the supply capacity of green products.
Market outlook: In the short run, the loose supply-demand pattern of general-grade precipitated silica cannot be reversed quickly. Product prices are likely to fluctuate within a narrow range, and enterprises producing ordinary grades will continue facing profit pressure. In the medium and long term, customized specialty precipitated silica featuring green and low-carbon properties, high dispersibility and low oil absorption boasts broad market space and will be the main development direction of the industry. With continuous growth of downstream new material industries, market requirements for precipitated silica in terms of performance indicators, batch stability and low-carbon attributes keep rising. To gain a firm foothold in fierce competition, precipitated silica enterprises need to further deepen research on powder surface modification technologies, continuously optimize production processes, improve supporting testing and formulation technical services, and reduce product carbon footprint. The whole industry has shifted from capacity competition to competition over quality and technology. Continuously promoting import substitution of high-end products and catering to demand from emerging downstream tracks such as tires, new energy and high-end coatings will serve as the core path for enterprises to achieve long-term stable development.
