Continuous Upgrading of Precipitated Silica Testing Standards, Quality Control Systems Build New Competitive Barriers for the Industry

In the second half of 2026, the full-chain quality control system of China’s precipitated silica industry, covering technological R&D, production and downstream acceptance, is being rapidly improved. The iteration and upgrading of testing standards have gradually become the core factor to distinguish product grades and widen the gap between enterprises. In the past, industrial testing mainly focused on basic physical and chemical indicators such as specific surface area, oil absorption value and particle size, with relatively single evaluation dimensions, which could hardly fully reflect the actual application performance of powder in customers’ formula systems. With the rising requirements of high-end downstream manufacturing industries for material stability, customers in tire, organosilicon, electronics, pharmaceutical and other fields have begun to include application-related indicators such as dynamic dispersibility, rheological properties, heavy metals, trace impurities and thermal stability into routine testing items. This forces precipitated silica manufacturers to upgrade laboratory testing capabilities and online quality control methods. Most low-end general precipitated silica manufacturers can only complete basic item testing, with large batch fluctuation of products, failing to meet the strict acceptance standards of high-end customers, and their market living space keeps shrinking. In contrast, leading enterprises have built an integrated testing platform combining physical and chemical analysis and application evaluation, which can carry out sample testing by simulating customers’ real formula environment and predict the performance of powder in rubber, silicone rubber and coating systems in advance. Relying on refined quality control, they seize the high-end market, and domestic substitution has entered a new stage where product stability serves as the core competition point. Many domestic powder material enterprises keep updating testing equipment, build application evaluation laboratories, and establish a full-process quality control system from raw material incoming inspection, online monitoring during production to finished product delivery. By continuously optimizing testing methods, they narrow the gap with international giants in product consistency.

Intelligent online quality control is becoming an important measure for precipitated silica factories to reduce costs and improve quality. In the traditional precipitation method for precipitated silica production, the reaction process relies on manual periodic sampling and testing. The test results are lagging, which easily causes indicator fluctuations between batches. The new generation of intelligent production lines integrate online particle size analyzers, turbidity sensors and real-time pH monitoring modules. They can continuously collect various parameters inside the reactor, automatically adjust feeding, temperature and stirring rate through algorithms, stabilize the nucleation and growth process of powder in real time, and greatly reduce fluctuations in product indicators. Intelligent quality control not only improves finished product consistency, but also reduces the output of unqualified products, cuts raw material loss and wastewater discharge, and achieves three benefits including quality improvement, cost reduction and emission reduction at the same time. At present, leading domestic precipitated silica enterprises have launched intelligent transformation of multiple production lines, while small and medium manufacturers are limited by capital and technology and make slow progress in intelligent upgrading, further widening the polarization of the industry. Meanwhile, third-party testing institutions in the industry are continuously improving their special testing capabilities for precipitated silica, providing application performance testing, impurity analysis, formula simulation and other testing services for small and medium-sized material enterprises to help them raise product testing standards.

The material access threshold of various downstream industries keeps rising, and customized testing items have become mandatory requirements for high-end customer selection. In the tire industry, apart from conventional physical and chemical indicators, tire manufacturers will conduct vulcanization characteristic tests and dynamic mechanical property tests on precipitated silica to evaluate the comprehensive impact of fillers on tire rolling resistance, wear resistance and wet skid resistance. In the silicone rubber sector, customers focus on testing the reinforcing efficiency and structural control of precipitated silica to avoid storage defects such as hardening and thickening of silicone rubber. The coating industry pays attention to the dispersion stability and matting uniformity of powder to prevent coating sedimentation and uneven delustering. For lithium battery separators, pharmaceutical excipients and other tracks, extremely low limits are set for heavy metals, harmful trace impurities and microbial content, with complicated testing procedures and long certification cycles. These application-oriented testing items cannot be replaced by simple physical and chemical indicators. Material enterprises need to deeply understand downstream formula systems and cooperate with customers to carry out a large number of parallel samples and long-term aging tests. Once certified by customers, material suppliers will obtain long-term and stable orders, forming high customer barriers.

At the level of international trade, material safety regulations around the world continue to be updated, and the testing items for imported and exported precipitated silica increase accordingly. Compliance testing has become a key focus for export enterprises. Once the new EU regulation on synthetic amorphous silica takes effect, in addition to the original physical and chemical indicators, supplementary data such as toxicological tests and dust hazard assessment will be required. Export enterprises need to complete full sets of testing and document filing in advance. The United States, Southeast Asia and other regions have also successively updated safety control requirements for powder materials, adding testing items for impurities and migratable substances. Domestic export enterprises need to synchronously improve product testing items, establish complete testing files, match regulatory standards of different countries and avoid trade compliance risks. Many enterprises move testing forward and conduct tests according to the standards of target export countries at the product R&D stage to reduce the risk of export blockage in the later period. Diversified demand in overseas markets also prompts domestic enterprises to develop grades adapted to regulations of different regions and expand global customers.

From the perspective of market pattern, competition based on basic physical and chemical indicators is nearing an end. In the future, the competition focus of precipitated silica enterprises will shift to application performance evaluation, full-process quality control capability and compliance testing system. Ordinary precipitated silica relying on the comparison of basic indicators has thin profits and limited growth space. High-end special precipitated silica maintains high product premium by virtue of a sound testing and quality control system to guarantee application stability of products. In the medium and long term, with the continuous upgrading of downstream new material industries, customers will impose stricter requirements on material testing and quality traceability. Enterprises with independent application evaluation laboratories, intelligent online quality control and complete compliance testing capabilities will continue to benefit. Industrial challenges still exist. High-end application testing equipment requires high investment, professional testing talents are scarce, and the testing cycle is long. Domestic enterprises still need to continuously invest resources to improve the quality control system. International material giants have accumulated a large number of application databases for a long time. Domestic enterprises need to continuously accumulate formula test data, improve product evaluation systems and raise the recognition of domestic powder materials in the global market.
