Entering mid-August, China’s chemical industry has stepped into the traditional summer off-season. Instead of slumping as it did in previous years, the silica market has seen mild gains backed by raw material cost support, production curbs for price stabilization by manufacturers, and solid demand from high-end new energy sectors, with structural divergence becoming increasingly prominent. According to industry monitoring data, the benchmark domestic silica price stood at 6000 CNY/ton on August 12, registering a slight day-on-day increase and a moderate uptick from early August, reversing the weak performance in late July and consolidating the market bottom. Overall, precipitated silica posted a modest recovery with trading driven only by rigid demand, while fumed silica maintained firm high prices with little fluctuation, alongside stark gaps in product availability.
In terms of supply, the overall operating rate of domestic silica facilities hovers between 62% and 65%, with production deliberately restrained. Persistent high temperatures across most regions hinder continuous factory production efficiency. Major production hubs including Shandong, Jiangsu, Jiangxi and Hubei have launched regular work safety inspections and environmental checks. Many small and medium-sized manufacturers have voluntarily cut production loads and suspended outdated units for maintenance, curbing total market supply. Leading enterprises have reached a consensus to rationalize shipments, abandoning low-price dumping and arranging production strictly based on actual downstream orders, effectively alleviating the long-standing industry overcapacity issue. At present, overall social inventory remains at a yearly low; turnover days for general standard grades are merely around one week. By contrast, high-dispersion and hydrophobically modified high-end silica for new energy tires, photovoltaic sealing and electronic components is in tight supply. Many large factories have scheduled orders up to early September, and the shortage will not ease anytime soon.
Upstream raw material prices have established a solid cost floor for silica, serving as the core driver behind the market recovery. Key feedstocks for precipitated silica including water glass, industrial silicon and sulfuric acid have stayed firm with no signs of decline. Industrial silicon prices have held steady thanks to stable hydropower supply and consistent procurement from the silicone sector, defining the minimum production cost of silica. Tight water glass supply in some regions has triggered minor price hikes, squeezing manufacturers’ profit margins and strengthening their willingness to uphold quotations. Feedstock silane monomers for fumed silica remain pricey, with partial suppliers limiting shipments. Under upward cost pressure, high-end fumed silica boasts far stronger price stability than regular precipitated products, forming a two-tier pattern: steady prices for low-end grades and resilient uptrend for premium variants. No raw material price drops are expected in the short run, which will continue underpinning the silica market.
Demand shows extreme polarization. Traditional rubber sectors are mired in off-season sluggishness, while high-end new energy and fine chemical fields maintain robust growth. As the largest downstream consumer of silica, tire plants have arranged rotating shutdowns and maintenance amid high temperatures. Coupled with falling replacement tire demand for civilian vehicles, the operating rate of domestic tire manufacturers has dipped to 75%-80%. Purchasers adopt a cautious strategy of frequent small-batch restocking rather than bulk inventory buildup, resulting in muted trading for general rubber-reinforcing precipitated silica with limited upside room. Additionally, downstream end-product shipments slow down for daily shoe materials, ordinary rubber accessories and architectural filling coatings, forcing the industrial chain to deplete accumulated stocks and further weighing on conventional silica grades.
On the contrary, high-end emerging markets enjoy thriving demand. The rising penetration of low rolling-resistance green tires driven by new energy vehicles greatly raises the dosage of high-dispersion silica compared with traditional tires. Silicone sealants for photovoltaic modules and buffer silicone rubber for frames keep expanding, fueling steady demand for ultra-fine high-purity silica. Fields such as lithium battery separator coatings, 5G electronic parts, waterproof and insulating components for precision instruments, and water-based eco-friendly coatings continuously absorb fumed silica and modified precipitated silica. Strong demand offsets the downturn in traditional industries and keeps high-end varieties chronically short in supply.
For specific quotations, factory prices of general rubber-grade precipitated silica range from 6000 to 6500 CNY/ton. Low-end filler-type silica carries lower prices mainly applied in plastic filling, while high-dispersion tire-specific reinforcing silica commands a premium. The fumed silica market stays stable for a long time: domestic hydrophilic grades are mainly priced between 20000 and 23500 CNY/ton, high-end hydrophobic modified variants range from 25000 to 28000 CNY/ton, and imported premium fumed silica is even more expensive without noticeable price fluctuations for a long period.
Industry analysts predict that the late August period will still fall within the traditional off-season, and rapid recovery in tire and daily rubber goods demand is unlikely. A sharp overall rally for silica lacks momentum. Nevertheless, low social inventory and firm raw material costs will sustain the market bottom, and prices are likely to fluctuate slightly upward. As temperatures drop in September, downstream factories will resume full operation. Coupled with sustained order releases from the new energy vehicle and photovoltaic industrial chains, high-dispersion precipitated silica and high-purity fumed silica will embrace a fresh demand surge with expanded upside potential.
