Rubber seals are widely used in automobiles, construction machinery, pipeline valves, home appliances and other industries, undertaking key functions such as sealing, shock absorption and dust prevention. Under complex service conditions with alternating high and low temperatures, oil erosion and ultraviolet radiation, the products are prone to failure including hardening, cracking and elastic attenuation. As a core reinforcing filler in rubber systems, silica can significantly improve the tensile strength, tear strength and wear resistance of vulcanized rubber, and optimize the processing performance of rubber compounds. Compared with carbon black, silica endows rubber with better weather resistance, anti-aging property and coloring capacity for light-colored products. Therefore, it is extensively adopted in formulations of white, colored and high-performance rubber seals. Nevertheless, abundant active hydroxyl groups on the silica surface tend to cause structuring of rubber compounds and viscosity rise during storage, which impairs mixing and processing. Balancing reinforcing effect and processing stability of rubber compounds remains a key challenge in formulation development of seals.
Rubber seals for different application scenarios have differentiated requirements on silica performance. Seals around automobile engines are constantly exposed to engine oil and fuel, requiring rubber reinforced by silica to deliver excellent oil resistance. Silica with low pore structure can reduce oil penetration. Sealing strips for air conditioners and doors & windows work outdoors for long periods, so grades with low impurities and UV resistance are preferred to delay rubber aging and discoloration. Sealing rings for hydraulic equipment bear reciprocating friction continuously, which calls for high-reinforcement silica to upgrade wear resistance and tear resistance. Silica manufacturers need to adjust the specific surface area, pore volume and surface modification degree of powder, and develop special grades suitable for various rubbers such as nitrile rubber, EPDM and fluororubber to match working conditions of different sealing products.
Mixing process directly affects the dispersion effect of silica in rubber matrix, and further determines the final quality of rubber seals. During rubber mixing, silica needs to be fully wetted and combined with rubber macromolecules. Uneven powder dispersion will form stress concentration points inside rubber, and seals tend to crack from defect positions under pressure. Mixing temperature, mixing time and feeding sequence all influence silica dispersion. Too low mixing temperature leads to poor fluidity of rubber matrix and difficulty in powder dispersion; excessively high temperature will trigger premature crosslinking of rubber compounds and damage processing performance. Many seal manufacturers encounter a common problem in new product development: laboratory samples meet performance standards, while the service life of mass-produced seals varies greatly. The root cause lies in the difficulty to maintain consistent silica dispersion during mass mixing. Silica suppliers have begun to provide technical guidance on mixing processes for downstream customers, helping optimize internal mixing parameters and reduce mass production failure risks.
The explosive growth of new energy vehicle industry drives upgrading of demand for high-performance rubber seals and boosts consumption of special silica. Seals for new energy vehicle battery packs and electric drive systems need to meet strict indicators simultaneously, including high and low temperature resistance, insulation, coolant resistance and low volatility. Conventional ordinary silica has high impurities and volatile substances, failing to satisfy safety requirements of battery compartments. After deep purification and surface modification, silica contains extremely low heavy metals and soluble salts. While improving mechanical properties of rubber, it will not release volatile small molecules to avoid corrosion of internal battery components. As new energy vehicle OEMs continuously raise reliability standards for parts, the access threshold for supporting rubber sealing raw materials keeps rising. Enterprises capable of stably supplying low-volatility and high-purity silica will gain more supporting opportunities.
The penetration rate of domestic silica in the ordinary rubber seal market keeps increasing. However, in high-end fluororubber and special hydrogenated nitrile sealing material sectors, it still faces competition from imported products. High-end sealing products impose extremely strict requirements on batch stability of raw materials. Tiny fluctuations in powder indicators will cause deviation in hardness and compression set of vulcanized rubber, directly resulting in leakage failure of seals. Many domestic silica products achieve performance close to imported ones in lab tests, yet suffer large indicator fluctuations during continuous mass production, making it hard to enter the supply chain of leading component manufacturers. Relying merely on product performance advantages is no longer sufficient to access high-end markets. Silica enterprises need to build rubber formulation testing laboratories, carry out evaluation of vulcanization performance, aging property and compression set, and provide full-set formulation technical support for seal customers, transforming from raw material suppliers to formulation solution service providers.
Looking ahead, with the sustainable development of equipment manufacturing and new energy industries, rubber sealing products are iterating toward high durability, low compression set and resistance to special media. Market demand for high-performance silica will continue to grow. Future R&D of silica will no longer only pursue single reinforcing capacity, but develop toward composite functions including low volatility, low impurities, anti-aging property and easy processing. Enterprises mastering precise powder structure regulation technology, familiar with various rubber mixing and vulcanization processes, and capable of providing supporting formulation technical services will continuously capture market share in high-end rubber sealing materials and unlock long-term growth space in automobile, construction machinery and new energy equipment tracks.
