For a long time in the past, a large number of domestic silica manufacturers offered limited product varieties, mostly producing general precipitated silica with converging product indicators. They could only compete for orders in low-end markets such as rubber and ordinary coatings by price. Once raw material prices fluctuated, corporate profitability would suffer severe impacts with weak risk resistance. With the refined development of the downstream new material industry, customers are no longer satisfied with standardized powder materials. Instead, they demand customized silica products matching their own formulation systems, forcing enterprises to adjust R&D and production strategies and shift toward the development of special grades in segmented tracks.

  The core of special-grade silica lies in targeted regulation of key parameters including specific surface area, particle size distribution, oil absorption value and surface hydroxyl content according to downstream application scenarios. The indicator requirements for silica vary greatly across different scenarios. For example, silica for silicone rubber requires strict control of specific surface area and moisture content to guarantee the reinforcing effect and storage stability of colloids. Toothpaste-grade silica for oral care features low abrasion and high cleaning power, with heavy metal impurities controlled at extremely low levels. Silica used as agricultural carriers needs proper pore structure and adsorption capacity to carry active pesticide ingredients and improve slow-release performance. Such special grades cannot simply adopt the production process of general products. Targeted adjustments must be carried out throughout the whole process including raw material ratio, reaction temperature, drying process and surface modification, placing higher requirements on enterprises’ formula R&D, lab and pilot test capabilities, and refined control over production.

  In terms of market structure, leading enterprises with solid R&D strength have built multi-grade product portfolios covering many segmented fields such as tires, silicone rubber, toothpaste, coatings and lithium batteries. They can quickly respond to customized development demands from customers and realize flexible production with exclusive formulas for individual clients. Restricted by insufficient R&D investment and inadequate testing equipment, small and medium-sized enterprises can hardly independently develop special-grade products. They have to keep competing fiercely in the red ocean market of general silica with unstable orders and slim profits. This gap further accelerates industrial differentiation. Market resources keep concentrating on leading enterprises capable of multi-grade R&D, and the Matthew effect in the industry continues to stand out. Many leading enterprises have also set up dedicated application laboratories to conduct formula tests jointly with downstream customers, predict changes in material demands in advance, develop next-generation special silica products simultaneously, deepen ties with downstream clients and build technological moats that cannot be quickly replicated.

  The growing market demand for special-grade silica also drives the continuous improvement of the industrial testing system. General silica only requires routine physical and chemical testing. In contrast, high-end special grades for toothpaste, food contact and lithium batteries need multiple safety and functional tests for heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, microorganisms, thermal stability and other items besides basic indicators. Some special grades exported overseas also need to complete material compliance certifications for corresponding regions, featuring long certification cycles and high testing costs, which virtually raise the industrial entry threshold. Some enterprises lack supporting testing capacity, resulting in prolonged new product development cycles. They may miss market windows and find it difficult to enter high-end segmented markets.

  In the long run, the market space for special grades will keep expanding. Continuous product upgrading in downstream industries and the launch of new materials and formulas will generate more personalized demands for powder materials. Market prices of general silica will remain under pressure in the long term with shrinking profit margins, while high-value-added special grades can maintain steady profit levels by virtue of differentiated performance. Industry analysts believe that the core competitiveness of silica enterprises in the future will no longer be production capacity scale, but material development capacity for segmented scenarios, application technical service capability and rapid product iteration capability. Only by digging deep into downstream segmented tracks, continuously launching special grades adapted to diverse applications and providing supporting technical services can enterprises gain a firm foothold in fierce industrial competition and achieve high-quality and sustainable development.
