In mid-September 2026, China’s precipitated silica industry developed steadily under the combined impacts of supply-demand game, technological innovation and overseas compliance policies. The industrial development focus has continuously shifted toward high-end, green and functional directions. At present, mainstream quotations for precipitated silica remain stable. Prices of raw materials including sodium silicate, soda ash and sulfuric acid fluctuate slightly and offer limited support to the overall market. The market pattern shows obvious hierarchical characteristics. Low-end products are trapped in fierce price competition with shrinking profit margins, while functional precipitated silica with surface modification treatment and high-purity fumed silica receive sufficient orders. Long-term purchasing intention of downstream customers is strong, and the premium advantage of such products stands out. With the continuous development of China’s high-end manufacturing industry, more R&D investment has been poured into precipitated silica as a key inorganic powder filler, and an increasing number of emerging application fields have been explored and put into application.

The ordinary precipitated silica segment in China still faces severe overcapacity and unrelenting pressure from homogeneous competition. Over the past few years, many small and medium-sized enterprises in China have successively launched production lines for general-purpose precipitated silica. The total market supply is abundant, and most products focus on mature fields such as low-end rubber filling, matting of ordinary coatings and reinforcement of conventional rubber and plastics. Convergent product indicators result in a lack of differentiated competitiveness. At this stage, the recovery of traditional manufacturing industries is moderate. The operation of traditional downstream sectors including tires, ordinary rubber products and architectural coatings remains at the level of rigid demand. Downstream factories generally adopt the strategy of purchasing on demand and low-inventory operation, with few large-scale stockpiling activities, and new demand in the low-end market is limited. Coupled with the low raw material costs, enterprises keep boosting sales by cutting prices to compete for orders, which further squeezes product profits. Most small and medium-sized manufacturers achieve considerable output but slim profits, and the phase-out of backward and inefficient production capacity continues to advance.

The high-end functional precipitated silica segment shows strong growth resilience and serves as a vital growth driver for the whole industry. Along with the industrial upgrading of global green tires, new energy, high-end electronics and other sectors, downstream customers set more refined requirements for the performance of precipitated silica beyond basic reinforcement and filling, including powder dispersibility, purity, hydrophobicity, hydrophilicity and aging resistance. High-dispersion precipitated silica for green tires, electronic-grade ultra-low impurity precipitated silica, hydrophobically modified precipitated silica and other high-end categories are widely applied in low rolling resistance tires, new energy energy storage materials, high-end anti-corrosion coatings, precision electronic packaging, medical auxiliary materials, high-end silicone sealants and other scenarios, thanks to excellent interfacial compatibility and stable powder performance. Chinese enterprises keep tackling core technologies of powder modification. The localization substitution of high-end precipitated silica is accelerating, gradually breaking the long-term monopoly of overseas brands. The market demand for high-end products is robust while inventories stay at a low level.

Overseas trade and domestic environmental policies jointly promote quality upgrading of the industry. The EU is pushing forward new regulations on synthetic amorphous silica and plans to classify this product as a hazardous substance, raising the entry threshold for China’s precipitated silica exported to the EU and setting higher standards in impurity testing, production filing, packaging labeling and other aspects. Chinese exporters have taken the initiative to carry out process optimization, product testing and compliance filing in advance, phasing out low-end export products with high impurities and poor stability, forcing the whole industry to improve product quality. At the same time, China’s dual-carbon goals and environmental supervision are continuously tightened. Old production lines with high energy consumption and high emissions are under strict restrictions. The extensive production model can no longer sustain. Clean production processes featuring solid waste recycling, low water consumption and low emissions have gradually become mandatory requirements for new projects, continuously optimizing the industrial capacity structure.

Breakthroughs are continuously achieved in production processes and powder modification technologies, unleashing sustained innovation vitality of the industry. Traditional precipitation processes suffer from high energy consumption, massive water consumption and large discharge of three wastes. More and more leading enterprises have increased R&D investment to develop low-carbon production routes. Carbonization-process precipitated silica developed from solid waste raw materials such as phosphorus ore-associated silicon resources, straw ash and industrial silicon slag has gradually realized mass production. It can recycle solid waste while cutting raw material costs and carbon emissions, achieving both economic and environmental benefits. Powder surface modification technology is also under continuous iteration. Customized precipitated silica with hydrophilic, hydrophobic or coupling modification can be produced according to different demands of downstream resin systems, solving long-standing pain points of traditional precipitated silica such as easy agglomeration, poor compatibility with organic systems and uneven dispersion, and greatly raising product added value.

The boundary of downstream applications keeps expanding, and new niche markets continuously release incremental demand. For a long time, tires, rubber and coatings have been the main consumption markets of precipitated silica. In recent years, with the rapid development of new material industries, the application scenarios of precipitated silica have been continuously extended. In the new energy sector, it can be used for battery separator modification, electrode powder dispersion and hydrophobic insulation of energy storage materials. In the high-end plastic industry, it improves the wear resistance of plastics and anti-slip performance of films. In the daily chemical and medical fields, it acts as toothpaste abrasives, matting and thickening agents for cosmetics and anti-caking agents for powder products. In the precision industry, it is suitable for high-end sealants, electronic insulating coatings, easy-to-clean coatings, abrasive filling and other scenarios. Rich niche scenarios have transformed precipitated silica from traditional industrial fillers into indispensable functional powder materials for high-end manufacturing, opening up long-term growth space.

Judging from the overall industrial development trend, the precipitated silica industry has stepped out of the development stage relying merely on capacity expansion and entered a high-quality development stage featuring comprehensive competition in technology, quality, service and green production. Future industrial competition will no longer focus on production capacity scale, but on comprehensive strength including powder modification technology, product stability, customized supporting capacity, green compliant production and stable supply. Leading enterprises with independent R&D strength, capability of customized indicators, stable mass production of high-purity products and clean production will continuously seize market share in new energy, high-end daily chemicals, precision electronics, high-end equipment and other tracks. Industrial concentration will keep rising, low-end homogeneous production capacity will be phased out at an accelerated pace. High-end products, green processes, refined categories and customized services will become the core mainline for the long-term development of the precipitated silica industry.
