At present, China’s high-performance polymer new material industry is undergoing rapid iteration. The industrial model of upstream and downstream joint development and formula collaborative optimization has gained widespread adoption. Fillers are no longer simple auxiliary raw materials; instead, they serve as core materials that determine the mechanical properties, weather resistance and stability of rubber, plastic, sealant, coating and new energy composite materials. Against this backdrop, the competition logic within the silica sector has undergone a fundamental shift. Market requirements for particle size distribution, pore structure, surface activity, dispersion uniformity and thermal stability of products continue to become more refined and high-end. Traditional general precipitated silica features mature processes, low technical barriers and severe product homogenization. It has long relied on low-price sales to capture market share, resulting in fierce industrial competition and shrinking profit margins. Most small and medium-sized manufacturers can only sustain marginal profitability. In contrast, functional silica with customized surface modification capabilities enables regulation of functional groups and structural optimization based on customers’ different resin systems, production processes and application scenarios. It effectively addresses common industrial pain points such as material agglomeration, precipitation, yellowing, insufficient reinforcement and poor aging resistance, significantly improving the overall performance of end products. Boasting excellent formula adaptability and material compatibility, modified specialty silica has penetrated deeply into high-quality tracks including premium rubber and plastic, new energy, electronic packaging and precision sealing, earning rising market recognition. It has become the flagship product prioritized for capacity expansion and technical upgrading by leading enterprises in the industry.

The upstream raw material supply system is experiencing structural readjustment. Resource utilization efficiency and low-carbon production capacity have gradually evolved into core barriers determining enterprises’ long-term cost competitiveness. Major feedstocks for precipitated silica, such as sodium silicate, soda ash and sulfuric acid, feature sufficient market supply, transparent circulation and moderate price fluctuations. Basic raw material costs across the industry tend to be homogeneous, and advantages in raw material procurement alone can no longer create profit gaps between enterprises. Against this backdrop, industry leaders have launched silicon-based solid waste recycling systems. Secondary resources including industrial silicon slag, waste glass and discarded silicon materials are recycled to produce basic feedstocks. Combined with energy-saving processes such as low-temperature synthesis, waste heat recovery and water recycling, these systems deliver notable reductions in comprehensive production costs and carbon emissions while guaranteeing stable product quality, creating dual advantages in cost and green production unavailable to traditional manufacturers. The production of high-end fumed silica relies heavily on metallurgical silicon feedstock, whose prices remain firm at high levels. Coupled with regular supervision over energy consumption control, environmental protection and workplace safety in China, the construction barriers and operation costs of high-end production lines keep rising. Small and medium-sized enterprises struggle to maintain stable mass production of high-quality premium grades. Capacity, orders and technical resources in the high-end niche market continue to concentrate among leading enterprises with integrated full-industry-chain supporting capabilities, driving steady growth in industrial concentration.

The logic governing capacity development on the supply side has transformed completely. The industry has bid farewell to extensive capacity expansion and entered a new phase focused on stock optimization, structural upgrading and high-end substitution. At this stage, domestic capacity for low-end general silica has reached saturation, and the market has long faced oversupply. Most existing conventional production lines no longer operate at full load. Instead, they dynamically adjust operating rates according to actual downstream orders, voluntarily cutting output, controlling inventories and stabilizing prices during traditional off-seasons. Flexible production helps avoid operational losses caused by inventory backlogs and distress selling. All newly added capacity and technical renovation projects target high-value-added niche segments, including high-dispersibility silica for tires, hydrophobically modified silica for lithium battery separators, silica dedicated to energy storage sealing, high-strength reinforcing silica for silicone rubber, matting silica for premium coatings and high-purity silica for food and pharmaceutical applications. These projects are equipped with clean production systems such as closed manufacturing, automatic sorting, tail gas recovery and wastewater recycling to achieve dual upgrades in product quality and green production. Divergence in inventory structures has intensified. Factory and social circulating inventories of ordinary industrial-grade silica keep accumulating, with abundant spot supply, slow trader shipments and prolonged destocking cycles. Customized modified premium grades follow a strict build-to-order and order-scheduling model. Leading downstream end customers place long-term fixed supporting orders, keeping spot inventories persistently low and supporting a healthier supply-demand balance.

Downstream application markets demonstrate an increasingly prominent layered and differentiated development trend. Demand remains steady yet weak in traditional sectors, while emerging high-end tracks continuously generate incremental growth, serving as the core driver for industrial structural upgrading. As the largest downstream consumer of silica, the tire industry continues to iterate formulas for green tires amid the global trend toward lightweight, low-carbon and energy-saving automobiles. Formulas with low rolling resistance, high wear resistance and anti-aging properties create rigid, stable and sustained purchasing demand for high-dispersibility silica, supporting long-term full orders for premium tire supporting materials. In contrast, traditional low-end sectors including ordinary rubber components, civil shoe materials and general architectural coatings face market saturation, fierce competition and sluggish end consumption. Downstream product manufacturers operate cautiously with shrinking order volumes, purchasing low-cost general silica only. Their procurement volumes remain stable yet deliver extremely low added value, offering limited support to overall industrial profitability. Meanwhile, high-end emerging sectors such as silicone sealants, advanced composite materials, specialty functional inks, precision electronic auxiliary materials, food anti-caking agents and pharmaceutical powder additives keep expanding. New material enterprises in these segments feature rapid R&D iteration, complex formula systems and strict product performance requirements. They generally require silica manufacturers to provide a full suite of technical services including customized modification, formula adaptation, performance testing and sample iteration, driving steady growth in demand for high-end functional silica and forming the primary source of incremental growth for the industry.

Foreign trade development models are undergoing profound reform. Export competition has shifted from pure price rivalry to an all-round contest covering product differentiation, technical services, stable supply and green certifications. In recent years, countries worldwide have introduced carbon tariffs, green trade barriers and new material access standards. Traditional high-carbon, low-value-added general silica faces mounting export obstacles, with overseas market share gradually squeezed by local production capacity and low-cost capacity in Southeast Asia. Domestic enterprises with independent modification R&D capabilities, refined production and low-carbon compliant manufacturing gain prominent advantages. Customized modified, high-purity and specialty silica can meet strict standards of premium new material customers in Europe, America, Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia, matching supporting systems for high-end rubber, electronics and new energy overseas. Export orders keep rising and customer stickiness continues to improve. Leading domestic exporters are no longer limited to simple product sales. Instead, they build long-term stable supporting partnerships with high-quality overseas clients through joint overseas laboratories, on-site technical service teams and long-term formula optimization services, continuously lifting the global market share and brand influence of Chinese silica in mid-to-high-end markets.

Looking ahead, the long-term structurally divergent trend in China’s silica market will persist. Restrained by loose supply and demand, high inventories and sluggish demand, low-end general products lack upward price momentum and will maintain a narrow weak volatile pattern throughout the year with squeezed profit margins. In contrast, customized, functional, high-purity specialty silica enjoys strong market resilience and risk resistance, backed by rigid demand from iterative upgrading of downstream premium new materials, supported by technical barriers, green qualifications and scarce capacity. As the traditional peak season approaches, operating rates in domestic tire, coating, adhesive and rubber product industries will rise steadily. Concentrated restocking by downstream buyers is expected to drive a recovery in overall industrial trading and improve market activity month-on-month. From a medium and long-term perspective, collaborative R&D across the value chain, customized modification technology, low-carbon clean production systems and full-process supporting services will reshape the industrial competition landscape fundamentally. Enterprises capable of deep participation in downstream formula development, rapid response to personalized customer requirements and continuous iteration of premium functional products will capture incremental dividends in niche segments. They will complete the transformation from raw material suppliers to material solution service providers, consolidating core competitive advantages amid industrial reshuffling and achieving sustainable long-term growth.
