Apart from rigid indicators on the dispersibility and reinforcing effect of high-dispersion silica, some overseas clients have begun requiring suppliers to provide complete carbon footprint reports. Low-carbon production qualifications have become access tickets to global supply chains. In silicone rubber and photovoltaic sealant sectors, downstream terminal products develop toward miniaturization and high weather resistance, imposing stricter control standards on low volatile content and low metallic impurities of hydrophobic fumed silica. For coatings, daily chemicals and pharmaceutical carrier markets, stricter limits on heavy metals and soluble ions are implemented for scenarios involving food and human contact. Conventional unmodified silica can hardly meet the requirements of high-end orders.
Subtle shifts are taking place in foreign trade patterns. Export pressure on traditional general industrial-grade silica continues to mount. Newly built precipitated silica production capacities in Southeast and South Asia have been successively put into operation. Capacity adjustment on the supply side proceeds in an orderly manner. Regions nationwide continuously implement dual control policies on energy consumption and environmental supervision. A batch of outdated production capacities with long service life, outdated pollution control facilities and substandard energy consumption are accelerating their exit from the market. New and proposed projects no longer blindly expand capacity of general precipitated silica. Investment focus shifts to high value-added categories including high-dispersion silica for tires, hydrophobic modified fumed silica and ultrafine functional silica. Rigid low-carbon process requirements are set at the project approval stage. In terms of regional layout, production bases in eastern coastal areas leverage geographical advantages close to high-end manufacturing clusters to focus on high-end modified silica. Central and western regions develop new projects relying on raw material and energy advantages, while strictly raising market access thresholds to avoid redundant construction of low-end production capacity.
Industrial research institutions state that the silica industry cannot break away from the structural differentiation pattern in the short run. Sufficient supply of general precipitated silica keeps market prices fluctuating at a weak level. Supported by demand from downstream new energy and high-end new material industries, various high-end modified special silica boast strong market resilience. In the medium and long term, low-carbon development, functional diversification and customization will remain the permanent development themes of the industry. The model of earning meager profits simply through mass production of general products will be gradually eliminated by the market. In the future, raw material suppliers that can deliver targeted modification solutions, complete carbon footprint traceability and long-term stable quality assurance will continuously seize market opportunities. Along with continuous expansion of downstream high-end manufacturing, structural upgrading of the silica industry will deepen further, and the pace of industrial consolidation is expected to accelerate.
