(July 29, 2026)The high-end silicone rubber industry expands rapidly, bringing prime opportunities for domestic substitution of hydrophobic modified fumed silica dedicated to silicone rubber. With rising demand for new energy auto components, medical silicone products, liquid silicone rubber (LSR) and electrical insulating silicone rubber, downstream manufacturers keep raising standards for mechanical strength, transparency, storage stability and anti-structuring performance of silicone rubber. As the core reinforcing filler, hydrophobic modified fumed silica directly determines tear strength, elasticity and processability of compound rubber and liquid silicone rubber finished products. The high-end silicone rubber track continuously drives steady growth in demand for functional silica.
For a long time, hydrophobic fumed silica applied in high-end transparent silicone rubber and medical-grade liquid silicone rubber has relied heavily on overseas imports. Conventional hydrophilic fumed silica features abundant surface hydroxyl groups. When blended into silicone rubber systems, it easily causes structuring, resulting in sharp viscosity rise of rubber compounds during long-term storage and severely undermining the stability of injection molding and extrusion. It also leads to reduced transparency and increased internal bubbles in finished products. Hydrophobic fumed silica treated via precise silane modification effectively reduces the density of surface silanol groups. It can disperse evenly in raw silicone rubber, greatly improving tensile and tear strength, and restrain rubber structuring. It is suitable for the production of high-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber (HTV) and addition-curable liquid silicone rubber, and serves as an indispensable raw material for highly transparent food-contact and medical-grade silicone products.
In the second half of 2026, multiple automated injection molding production lines for liquid silicone rubber are successively put into operation in China. New energy vehicle manufacturers accelerate the localization substitution of sealing silicone for battery housings and insulating silicone for wiring harnesses. Updated regulations for medical devices become stricter, and safety testing standards for medical silicone rubber raw materials are fully upgraded. Leading domestic silica enterprises continuously increase investment in R&D of silicone-rubber-specific grades, optimize high-temperature combustion synthesis and surface modification technologies, strictly control metallic impurities, and develop a series of hydrophobic products with graded specific surface areas. Some powder manufacturers carry out long-term collaborative research with silicone material research institutes, and customize filler solutions for transparent silicone, flame-retardant silicone and special silicone with low compression set.
Different types of silicone rubber generate differentiated indicator requirements. Liquid LSR injection molding rubber prioritizes powder dispersibility and thixotropic stability to avoid fluctuation of injection pressure; highly transparent silicone requires silica with narrow particle size distribution and low haze; electrical insulating silicone rubber attaches importance to purity and resistance to damp-heat aging; food and medical contact products implement the strictest control standards for heavy metals and volatile substances. A single universal grade cannot adapt to all scenarios, pushing powder enterprises to build a complete portfolio of hydrophilic and hydrophobic products. Silicone rubber manufacturers adopt lengthy supplier qualification procedures, and new materials must pass mixing tests and long-term aging verification, continuously lifting technical barriers of this track.
The track boasts promising prospects while industrial challenges remain. The production of high-end hydrophobic fumed silica involves sophisticated processes. Combustion hydrolysis and surface coating modification impose extremely high requirements on equipment and process control. Established international material enterprises have been engaged in the silicone rubber sector for years with comprehensive formula databases. Many small and medium-sized powder manufacturers adopt primitive modification processes with unstable batch performance, and can only compete in the low-end general compound rubber market. Unregulated circulation of low-cost inferior powder also disturbs the market price system.
Differentiated supply-demand pattern becomes increasingly prominent. Leading enterprises equipped with stable modification processes, complete testing capacity and formula technical support achieve continuous growth of high-end orders. Manufacturers lacking refined modification technologies are trapped in low-end price competition. The silicone rubber industry accelerates concentration, and orders keep flowing to upstream raw material suppliers with complete certifications and stable quality control.
Industrial research institutes predict that demand for liquid silicone rubber, medical silicone rubber and new-energy supporting silicone will maintain growth in the next three years, and the market scale of high-end hydrophobic silica for silicone rubber will expand steadily. Products in this track feature high added value and stable demand, representing a core direction for fumed silica enterprises to escape homogeneous competition and realize product upgrading.
In the long run, developing modified fumed silica for silicone rubber facilitates domestic silicon-based powder enterprises to accelerate import substitution of high-end products. Domestic silica manufacturers shall continuously advance core technologies including particle size regulation and precise hydrophobic modification, and obtain relevant compliance certifications for food contact and medical materials. Enterprises need to deepen joint development with silicone rubber manufacturers, iterate filler products matching new-generation special silicone rubber, and strengthen the competitive position of domestic fumed silica within the global silicone industrial chain.
