Downstream coating enterprises continuously raise supplier screening thresholds. Apart from physical and chemical indicators, tests on long-term storage stability and weathering aging are added, extending the certification cycle for new products.
The track boasts considerable growth potential while market competition conflicts become prominent. The production of ultra-fine modified silica for high-end coatings requires precise process control, and purification & modification procedures bring relatively high costs. Overseas brands have long occupied supply chains of high-end varnishes and imported inks. A large number of small and medium-sized domestic manufacturers focus on general precipitated silica and seize low-end markets via low prices, disturbing the price system. Meanwhile, cyclical price fluctuations of upstream raw materials such as water glass and sulfuric acid continuously squeeze profit margins of small and medium powder manufacturers.
The supply-demand differentiation pattern keeps emerging. Leading enterprises equipped with fine modification processes, complete testing laboratories and formula technical support achieve steady growth of high-end orders. Manufacturers only capable of producing ordinary powder without application R&D capacity can only compete in low-margin low-end markets. The coatings industry accelerates concentration, and orders continuously converge to raw material suppliers with stable quality control and complete compliance certificates.
Industrial research institutes analyze that the penetration rate of eco-friendly coatings will keep rising within the next three years, and demand for functional silica in coatings and inks will maintain steady growth. Compared with the fiercely competitive tire track, special silica for high-end coatings delivers higher added value, serving as an important direction for enterprises to optimize revenue structure.
In the long run, deploying modified silica dedicated to coatings and inks helps expand downstream market boundaries and mitigate operational risks caused by cyclical fluctuations of the single rubber industry. Domestic silica enterprises shall continuously deepen core technologies of particle size regulation and surface modification, segment product series for different coating scenarios and complete various domestic and international environmental compliance certifications. Strengthen upstream and downstream collaborative R&D with coatings and ink manufacturers, accelerate import substitution of silicon dioxide for high-end coatings, and consolidate the competitive advantages of China’s silicon-based powder in the field of fine chemical new materials.
